Bidet Buyer's Guide

If you’ve committed to reducing household waste and want to practice better personal hygiene, a bidet can be a great investment for your home. It’s a green alternative to using so much toilet paper, and it can reduce your chances of plumbing problems and prevent frustrating clogs. Bidets can ensure you feel clean after using the restroom, and while using one might require a bit of a learning curve, you may end up preferring it to using excessive amounts of toilet paper.

When trying to find the bidet that will work best in your home, you’ll need to look at a few factors. You’ll want to know what type of seat it has — whether it’s electric or non-electric. For your comfort, you’ll also want to know what type of water adjustments it offers and if it provides any heated features. Finally, you’ll be interested in what kind of nozzle it uses, whether it is single or dual, and if it pulsates or oscillates.

Considerations

Type

Bidets don’t all use the same method to provide their clean-up duties. There are two main types you’ll see, and installing them requires different components. To help you figure out which one will work best in your bathroom, you need to understand how each type of bidet works and what installing them may require.

Here are the two different types of bidets you’ll encounter and everything you need to know about each to make an informed decision.

  • Electric: Electric bidets will need to be plugged into an outlet. That means if you use this type, you’ll need to have an outlet near your toilet. If you don’t, you can still make it work by running an extension cord to an outlet nearby or having an outlet installed close to the bidet by an electrician. Electric bidets have certain advantages, such as allowing more features, offering a remote control, having a heated seat, being simple to use, and giving a warm water wash.
  • Non-electric: These types of bidets often come as attachments you’ll install as an add-on to your existing toilet. They don’t require electricity, and they work by using the existing water pressure. These are ideal for people on tight budgets, but many of them don’t offer adjustable nozzles and other helpful features. They can also take longer to get the hang of while using them because they do not offer as many adjustable features.

Water Adjustments

Some bidets don’t allow you to make adjustments to the water that is hitting you, while other ones give you a range of adjustments you can make. Being able to make water adjustments to your bidet will greatly increase the comfort level you’ll have while using one. If it doesn’t feel right at first, you can play around with the settings until you find one that works best for you.

Here are some of the water adjustments you may be able to make with your bidet.

  • Pressure: When you use a bidet, you’re washing extremely sensitive areas. That means what feels good for one person may not be ideal for another, so it’s helpful if you can change the pressure setting if you need to. If a bidet model allows you the ability to make only one water adjustment, pressure is usually it. An electric bidet may offer four or five pressure settings, so each member of your household can experiment and find what works best for them.
  • Temperature: Not everyone enjoys the sensation of a cold stream of water hitting their sensitive areas. If you know right away that you’ll hate that feeling, you should look for a bidet that offers warm water as well as cold. Many electric bidets will give you that choice, and a few non-electric bidets offer that option as well, but they can be more complicated to install because they’ll have to be set up to use your house’s hot water supply through a connector line.

Heat

Having heat settings can be soothing when using a bidet, and they can help give the experience a luxury feel you’ll enjoy using. If you want a bidet that offers heated features, you’ll need to opt for an electric bidet. Although they can be more expensive and will need to be hooked up to an outlet, you’ll be thankful every time you use your special features. Here are the two heated features you can expect on certain bidets.

  • Seat: If you live in an area with cold winters, you’ll appreciate sitting on a warm seat on a chilly day. Many of the bidets that come with heated seats give you the option to adjust the temperature so you can find the feel that’s just right for you. This is a feature that only comes with electric bidets.
  • Air dryer: If you want to be dried after your wash, you’ll need to find a bidet that offers an air dryer — and that’s not a standard feature with every bidet. Some bidets also offer a heated air dryer, and they give you an adjustable temperature so you can be more comfortable while you’re drying off.

Nozzle

Nozzles on a bidet can offer a straight spray in one spot or come with a number of features that are designed to make your experience more comfortable. If you’re not on a strict budget, it can help to have the following extra features on the nozzle.

  • Single: If you see a bidet listed as having a single nozzle, it means it only uses one wand with one nozzle for washing. Some people prefer the simplicity of having a single nozzle to control.
  • Dual: This type has two nozzles — one for washing the front and one for washing the back. Some users think it is easier to have two different nozzles set with the pressure they prefer for each area.
  • Pulsating: If your nozzle has a pulsating feature, it will give you a pulse wash experience. That means the water will alternate between soft and firm.
  • Oscillating: Just as an oscillating fan turns side to side to blow air into more parts of a room, an oscillating nozzle on a bidet is designed to provide more coverage. An oscillating nozzle will move the spray slightly and quickly for extra coverage.

FAQS

Do bidets really make a difference in how clean you are?

If you’ve never used a bidet before, it might seem intimidating. But once you begin to use it, you may end up preferring it. Many people who use bidets say they feel cleaner after using the restroom than they did when they solely used toilet paper. Bidets can offer a superior hygiene experience compared to just toilet paper.

Is it hard to install a bidet?

Installing a bidet toilet seat is not as difficult as you might think. If you have a few tools at home, you can do it by yourself in under an hour. You’ll be able to find instructions or how-to videos online to help you. If you’re installing a freestanding bidet, you’ll need dedicated plumbing lines, so it may be best to call in an expert, unless you’re super handy.

Do bidets save money?

Bidets offer a surprising way to save money. You won’t buy nearly as much toilet paper, which will be a substantial cost savings. It can also help you avoid potentially costly clogs and plumbing issues from using all that toilet paper. You will have an upfront cost from buying your bidet, but that will quickly be recouped.
